LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS - WEIGHING THE COSTS
Each type of bag that we use in everyday life has a cost beyond the monetary – and the single-use polythene bags and the papers bags have higher costs in terms of energy used to produce them, the harm to the environment and excessive use of water.
6 kgs of single-use polythene bags cost 763 GJ of non-renewable energy to produce, cause greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to .04 metric tonnes of CO2 and consume 58 gallons of water. Most of those bags find their way to landfills, choke sewage and drainage systems and are incinerated causing air pollution.
52 kgs of paper bags cost 2,620 GJ of non renewable energy to produce, cause greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to .08 metric tonnes of CO2 and consume 1,000 gallons of water. This is in addition to the long-term costs of deforestation and soil erosion.
In comparison, the GAIA polypropylene reusable bags have much lower costs to health and environment.
42 kgs of GAIA bags cost 3,736 GJ of non-renewable energy to produce but each bag can be used a minimum of 8 times bringing the cost down to 467 GJ. The greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to .033 metric tonnes of CO2 and consumes only 85 gallons of water. More importantly, the bags are 100% recyclable and rarely end up in garbage dumps or landfill sites.
